- New
Field in Moreland, Georgia
We have a new field in Region 7. It's a
50 acre hayfield at Bear Creek Farm, a beautiful 1,000 acre horse
farm in Moreland, Georgia, which is about 50 miles south of Atlanta.
The field is made available to us through the generosity of Bear
Creek Farm's owners, Hal and Linda Barry. Hal is the Master of the
Bear Creek Hounds foxhunting club and is a Foxhound breeder, and
Linda breeds Boykin Spaniels, so they are both horse AND dog people.
They appreciate that lure coursers, like foxhunters, rely on the
kindness of landowners to pursue their sport.
The field is planted in Bermuda grass, and offers wide-open
spaces with few visual barriers. It has nice rolling terrain, and a
wide variety of start/finish choices to give the dogs new "looks"
from one trial to the next. It is bounded on two sides by four-board
wood fence and forest on the other two sides. Bear Creek Road, a
very lightly used county road, runs on one side of the field and is
separated from the road by a fence. The field is "out in the country,"
and offers beautiful countryside views from every vantage point.
Here is a link to an aerial photo of the field on Google maps:
The green arrow in the
photo sits on the field, which is roughly L-shaped, just to the
north of the road.
The field is about 20 minutes away from Newnan, where a wide
variety of motels and restaurants can be found. It is about 10 miles
from I-85 and 45 miles from I-75. Overnight RV parking on the field
will be allowed. There is no power or water on the field, but there
will be cool-down water available if the weather is warm.
Needless to say, we are excited about this new venue, and
hope that our coursing friends from near and far will join us.
